Alpha waves are electromagnetic oscillations in the frequency range of 8–12 Hz arising from synchronous and coherent (in phase / constructive) electrical activity of thalamic pacemaker cells. They are also called Berger's wave in memory of the founder of EEG.

Alpha waves are one type of brain waves detected either by electroencephalography (EEG) or magnetoencephalography (MEG) and predominantly originate from the occipital lobe during wakeful relaxation with closed eyes. Alpha waves are reduced with open eyes and drowsiness and sleep. They are thought to represent the activity of the visual cortex in an idle state. Occipital alpha waves during periods of eyes closed are the strongest EEG brain signals. They usually can be detected with the naked eye.

An alpha-like variant called mu (μ) can be found over the motor cortex (central scalp) that is reduced with movement, or the intention to move. Alpha waves do not start to appear until three years of age.

Is there a PC game which relies on Alpha Brainwaves?
Q. Many years ago, at an IT exhibition, I saw a programme being demonstrated where you wired the PC up to your head and you could make a fish move across the screen if your brain produced alpha waves. The purpose of it was to teach you how to be calm and stress-free. Does anything like this still exist?

A. Brain interfaces are still very experimental. I doubt anything like this exists in the consumer sector. The closest thing you'll find I know of is a Wii controller. I've seem that stuff too and it's amazing. It will likely be applied for those in need before it reaches the private sector. I know they are working on stuff like this for quadriplegics to help them gain independence. I don't have the link but I know they are making progress. Ask any Neurologist and they'll tell you they are in their infancy in their field compared to the rest of modern medicine. Scientists and doctors still don't have a strong understanding of how the brain works. Look at anti-depressant ads, "the exact interaction of this medicine is not known".

Alpha brain waves - How long ?
Q. Hi all, i now know that the brain is in "alpha mode" just before sleeping and after waking up. However, does anyone know for how long the brain is in alpha mode before sleeping and after waking up? Thanks.

A. See my profile! Take a look at this. Alpha waves are usually associated with relaxation, so it depends on who long a person is relaxed for, and if anything in their environment alters their consciousness.
