Is it normal to daydream about things that are never going to happen?
Q. For example- I dream of going out with boys I am too shy to talk too I still think about how great it would have been to win the Regional Spelling Bee and imagine myself doing it even though I lost. I dream about being rich, having a mansion, being the most popular girl in school, etc. Things like that. I do it- A LOT. I'm wondering how many people do it, if it's normal, and why I do it?

A. Most people naturally daydream. But did you know that daydreaming can be an illness? There is such a thing as Maladaptive Daydreaming. It's a condition that causes excessive daydreaming. Take a look at this short article, and see if this sounds like you: I have Maladaptive Daydreaming. I've done exactly what you describe. My mind weaves elaborate fantasies and scenarios all the time. I'll be reading a book or watching TV, and placing myself in the book/show. I've been doing it all my life. If you daydream in a way that becomes a problem in your life, or interferes with your life, you may have this issue. Hope that answers your question.
