A dream is a succession of images, thoughts, sounds, or emotions passing through the mind during sleep. The content and purpose of dreams are not fully understood, though they have been a topic of speculation and interest throughout recorded history. The scientific study of dreams is known as oneirology.

Cultural history

Jacob's dream of a ladder of angels

Throughout history, people have sought meaning in dreams or divination through dreams. Dreams have been described physiologically as a response to neural processes during sleep, psychologically as reflections of the subconscious, and spiritually as messages from gods or predictions of the future. Many cultures had practiced dream incubation, with the intention of cultivating dreams that were prophetic or contained messages from the divine.

Judaism has a traditional ceremony called "Hatavat Halom" – literally meaning making the dream a good one. Through this rite disturbing dreams can be transformed to give a positive interpretation by a rabbi or a rabbinic court.

How do you deal with horrible dreams that leave you drained & get to you?
Q. I've been having lots of bad dreams this past year that were just unbelievable. The scenarios were just the most unimaginable fear-provoking and insane things ever, and I often wake up and just feel depressed just from the dream alone. Why am I getting these kinds of dreams frequently and what can I do about them to handle them? They ARE just dreams but they still really get to me. It feels like "night torture".

A. stress triggers dreams. Maybe you could look up the dreams at dreammoods.com, that is a good site. Sylvia Browne's Book of Dreams explains the different kinds of dreams and what your dreams might mean to you. Even if you are not a fan of hers, this is a good book. I suffer from nightmares, so I pray that God protect me while I sleep and if I have bad dreams that he helps me forget them when I wake up. Peace be with you.

What does smoking cigarettes in your dreams mean?
Q. Since I can remember, I've had dreams off and on with me smoking in them. I've never smoked in my life, but in my dreams, I can vividly taste the cigarette and smoke and something tells me that I've done it before when I wake up, although I know I never have. Recently, every dream I've had has included smoking cigarettes. They also commonly depict me traveling or running away from family. Any clues as to what this may mean?

A. Ooh, you're a rebellious one! You're struggling for independence and control in your life, and something seems to be keeping you back. It's like you're on a treadmill, and you're subconsciously frustrated and angry about your inability to obtain your goal. As a result, a part of you has gotten very rebellious. You're dreaming about doing things you perceive as somehow wrong or naughty. You smoke cigarettes. You run away from your family. It's like your mind is saying: "Look at me now! Look at what I can do!" This probably gives you a subconscious thrill, and, as a result, you dream about it more often than mundane, everyday stimuli that aren't exciting. Rebellious dreams often include sexual content as well; so if you start having dreams… [cont.]

What are some recent studies that show dreams have an underlying meaning?
Q. I'm writing an essay and I'm trying to prove a point that dreams have an underlying meaning. So far I've talked about how several past cultures believe that dreams have an underlying meaning. To further prove my point, I want to talk about people that have recently studied dreams and believe they have an underlying meaning, not that they are just images and thoughts. Preferably 1830's and up, who are some people that have studied this?

A. Most studies are about how we sleep and not as much as to how we dream. I am uncertain where you could even go to and find a study like that

A dream is the experience of envisioned images, sounds, or other sensations during sleep. The events of dreams are often impossible or unlikely to occur in physical reality, and are usually outside the control of the dreamer.

Dreams can also be what we want for ourselves in our lives, our hopes, our expectations, our plans – things which we wish for ourselves but often seem forever to be tantalizingly just beyond our reach.
