The term subconscious is used in many different contexts and has no single or precise definition. This greatly limits its significance as a meaning-bearing concept, and in consequence the word tends to be avoided in academic and scientific settings.

In everyday speech and popular writing, however, the term is very commonly encountered as a layman's replacement for the unconscious mind, which in Freud's opinion is a repository for socially unacceptable ideas, wishes or desires, traumatic memories, and painful emotions put out of mind by the mechanism of psychological repression. However, the contents do not necessarily have to be solely negative. In the psychoanalytic view, the unconscious is a force that can only be recognized by its effects — it expresses itself in the symptom. Unconscious thoughts are not directly accessible to ordinary introspection, but are supposed to be capable of being "tapped" and "interpreted" by special methods and techniques such as meditation, random association, dream analysis, and verbal slips (commonly known as a Freudian slip), examined and conducted during psychoanalysis. Carl Jung developed the concept further. He divided the unconscious into two parts: the personal unconscious and the collective unconscious. The personal unconscious is a reservoir of material that was once conscious but has been forgotten or suppressed.

The idea of the 'subconscious' as a powerful or potent agency has allowed the term to become prominent in the New Age and self-help literature, in which investigating or controlling its supposed knowledge or power is seen as advantageous. In the New Age community, techniques such as autosuggestion and affirmations are believed to harness the power of the subconscious to influence a person's life and real-world outcomes, even curing sickness. Skeptical Inquirer magazine criticized the lack of falsifiability and testability of these claims . Physicist Ali Alousi, for instance, criticized it as unmeasurable and questioned the likelihood that thoughts can affect anything outside the head.. In addition, critics have asserted that the evidence provided is usually anecdotal and that, because of the self-selecting nature of the positive reports, as well as the subjective nature of any results, these reports are susceptible to confirmation bias and selection bias.

The word 'subconscious' is an anglicized version of the French subconscient as coined by the psychologist Pierre Janet. Janet himself saw the subconscient as active in hypnotic suggestion and as an area of the psyche to which ideas would be consigned through a process that involved a 'splitting' of the mind and a restriction of the field of consciousness.

How can I gain access to my subconscious?
Q. I can remember things, but only if I keep looking at what I'm trying to remember over and over and over again. I want to gain access to my subconscious. I heard that the subconscious remembers everything that you've seen and that your dreams are sometimes your subconscious playing back the things that you've seen. So I was thinking about trying to use that for school, using my subconscious to gain information quickly, like a photographic memory. I want to be able to see things and be able to retain that information. Any suggestions, sites, or ideas?

A. First of all you need to realize that "subconscious" is NOT a Freudian idea, but from Pierre Janet (jan-AY) and doesn't mean what you think it means. Look it up. Secondly...you need not posit a fictional multilayer consciousness as Freud did (Conscious, Pre-conscious, Unconscious) to understand the human mind. Just think of your so-called "subconscious" as containing thoughts you haven't thought of recently, but can, as soon as you think of them. Unless you are one of those gifted with an eidetic memory (the "photographic" thing), you cannot create it in yourself or develop it, if you don't already have it. If you want to remember things better, you might want to consider one of the several good memory courses. I once counseled a couple… [cont.]

What are proven ways to unlock the subconscious?
Q. Hi guys, I'm starting to realize how I am constantly sabotaging myself through my subconscious. I really want to resolve that once and for all. I've done therapy etc, even did primal for a while and that didn't lead to much. Would anyone have a suggestion - might meditation be useful?

How long does it take for the subconscious mind to accept an affirmation?
Q. What's the best to reprogram your subconscious mind?..through listening to a tape/cd with recorded affirmations or saying them out loud?

A. You can view yourself as two beings. You cant controll your subconscious mind, but.. you can suggest things to it. Now your subconscious mind is not dumb. But it is likely to accept things faster when it see's them physically. (like when u have a dream u believe it is really happening) Now your conscious seems to constantly send messages to your subconsiousnesss, so it is used to ignoring most of the messages you send. But if you for example get in a scary situation. it will remember it, and next time when you get in a similiar situation, it will trigger a fight or flee reaction. (that is why you get nervous and your heart starts beating faster) Now it is said that if you sleep and suggest things to your subconsiousness it is more… [cont.]
